Education programmes
Available programmes
Teachers can choose from four main programme options based upon their time and curriculum requirements.
Tour - A general walking tour that gives a brief overview of the Taupo fishery, wild trout ecology, and the Genesis Energy Freshwater Aquarium.
Hands On Learning - Comprehensive lessons based upon wild trout ecology, the importance of freshwater, management of the Taupo fishery and angling as a recreational activity. Students will explore some or all of these themes through interactive, hands-on type activities.
Fantastic Whio - Using Whio (Blue Duck) as the context, learn about this threatened white water specialist and its need for large areas of quality fast flowing river habitat. How do we look after our freshwater resources for future generations while balancing the needs of energy generation and other resource users?
NCEA Programme - Units of work that are based upon specific, high quality case study information. These lessons are ideal to use for NCEA achievement standards or unit stands in the subjects of geography, biology, or science.

Cost
Through the generous support of Genesis Energy, our primary sponsor, there is no official charge for school groups to participate in a Taupo for Tomorrow education programme. However a donation/koha is greatly appreciated as this money helps to cover additional teaching materials and running costs. Please make checks payable to the Tongariro National Trout Centre. If students are fishing as part of their programme, the total charge is $8:00. This charge includes a child's 24 hour Taupo Area fishing licence and an administration cost. Licences can be purchased from the Trout Centre.

Curriculum integration
The majority of content in Taupo for Tomorrow programmes is linked to the New Zealand Curriculum Framework for the learning areas of science, social studies and environmental education. Curriculum integration of both the tour and hands on learning programmes for these learning areas (levels 1-5) are identified in the PDF document. Please refer to the NCEA programme section of this website for senior level secondary school topics.
Tailor-made programmes
Please note that we are happy to develop an education programme that specifically meets your curriculum requirements for learning areas that are not identified here. Contact the Taupo for Tomorrow educator to discuss this option further.
