Hands on learning

Primary to intermediate aged students

A half to a full day is required.

This programme is packed with hands on, fun-filled learning involving both a classroom and an outdoor component. During the day students learn about wild trout ecology, the importance of freshwater environments and the ways in which these natural resources can be sustained.

The standard Option 2 programme timetable is as follows:

9:30 - 10:00 Introductory tour around trout centre
10:00 - 10:30 Managing a fishery activity
10:30 - 11:00 Morning tea + feeding trout
11:00 - 11:30 Trout habitat activity
11:30 - 11:45 Visit the viewing chamber
11:45 - 12:30 Trout Anatomy activity
12:30 - 1:15 Lunch
1:15 - 2:00 Water quality testing activity
2:00 - 2:30 Looking after freshwater environments

(note: This timetable is flexible - we will suit it to meet your needs)

Fishing Activity

For students between the ages of 6 - 14, a fly fishing experience can also be requested as part of this programme. In order to participate, each student must purchase a Taupo Fishery child day licence ($4.50) at the Tongariro National Trout Centre.
