Flow Measurements

How do scientists calculate water flow? Students will use mathematics, reasoning, and the scientific method.

They will:

  • Measure volume of fish tanks in the hatchery

  • Measure cross sectional areas

  • Determine water velocity using a tennis ball, distance and a timer (and subsequently determine flow rates)

    • In the hatchery channel

    • In a stream

  • Be able to explain why surface velocity may not be representative

  • Record data from a scientific flow-meter and explain its operation

Data to take back to school will allow:

  • Comparison of instrumental and 'tennis ball' methods for flow determination

  • Discussion of different types of flow in water bodies

  • Calculation of how long it would take to fill a fish tank in the hatchery

  • Discussion of scientific method, replication etc.
