Flow Measurements
How do scientists calculate water flow? Students will use mathematics, reasoning, and the scientific method.
They will:
-
Measure volume of fish tanks in the hatchery
-
Measure cross sectional areas
-
Determine water velocity using a tennis ball, distance and a timer (and subsequently determine flow rates)
-
In the hatchery channel
-
In a stream
-
-
Be able to explain why surface velocity may not be representative
-
Record data from a scientific flow-meter and explain its operation
Data to take back to school will allow:
-
Comparison of instrumental and 'tennis ball' methods for flow determination
-
Discussion of different types of flow in water bodies
-
Calculation of how long it would take to fill a fish tank in the hatchery
-
Discussion of scientific method, replication etc.
