Fast Facts
-
Whio, or 'blue ducks' are a bird endemic to New Zealand (found only here)
-
They are one of only four duck species in the world who live all year round on fast-flowing rivers.
-
Whio are an ‘indicator species’, only living on clean, fast-running freshwater streams and rivers. Where you find whio, you’ll find a clean waterway.
-
Using their special 'soft lip' at the end of their bill, whio feed on the aquatic insect larvae found on the rocks in their river.
-
Whio are nationally vulnerable - there are less than 3000 whio - anywhere!
-
Their biggest threat are predators, such as stoats, rats and cats.
